A free adaptation of the short story “Der Findling”, by Heinrich von Kleist (published in Portugal under the title “The Orphan”, in a translation by José Maria Vieira Mendes), The Child is the first feature-length film by Marguerite de Hillerin and Félix Dutilloy-Liégeois, who also wrote the script.
In the middle of the 16th century, Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city, where the apogee of a power brought by expansion begins to crumble, at the same time as the rigidity of an increasingly overbearing Inquisition takes hold.
Near Lisbon, Bela (João Arrais), a teenager adopted by a French-Portuguese couple of wealthy businessmen, lives an intense love story with Rosa (Inês Pires Tavares) and a friendship with Jacques (Loïc Corbery), a friend of his adoptive parents. Bela tries to find her place, but a succession of uncontrollable events (caused by misunderstandings, ambiguities, jealousy…), lead to disaster.
