Synopsis

The Berlin Wall came down. Television stations broadcast footage worldwide of people celebrating on top of the wall. In the Carmelite Convent of St Teresa, an enclosed order of Discalced Carmelites, Madalena sees the news on television and runs to call Sister Lúcia, the visionary of Fátima who foretold the conversion of Russia.

Madalena is a beautiful, devout novice who has studied medicine. She made friends with Lúcia when she treated her for pneumonia. The United States Ambassador had sought out the visionary to talk to her about Russia, but Lúcia was burning up with fever. With the Carmelite doctor away, it was Madalena who took care of Lúcia. She tended to her while she was sick and helped her to recover. That was the beginning of a close friendship that stayed with Lúcia until the end of her days. It is Madalena that Lúcia will make the guardian of the third secret of Fátima.

In conversations between the two nuns, Lúcia tells Madalena everything that happened after the deaths of Jacinta and Francisco, the prophecies of Fátima, the visions of Our Lady and the Infant Jesus and her difficulties in complying with an apparently simple request Our Lady had asked of her: to learn to read. Lúcia took that request seriously and devoted herself to learning more and more all through her life. But not everybody around her, even within the Church, looked kindly on that desire to learn. Not everybody around her, even her own mother and important Church dignitaries, believed that Lúcia had seen Our Lady.

The Guardian of the Secret is the sad and moving story of Lúcia, a child touched by Our Lady, who had to fight bravely against the limitations and impositions that the world and the Church placed on her throughout her life, so that she could fulfil her destiny. But it is also the story of Madalena, a young nun with a scientific spirit, who doesn’t hesitate to ask the questions that nobody inside the Church would dare put into words. Was Pope John Paul I poisoned? Was he the bishop in white described in the third secret of Fátima? Or was it John Paul II, who was shot on 13 May (1981), or another?

After the death of Sister Lúcia in 2004, Madalena, now a Carmelite, became the guardian of the secret.

Lúcia “The Guardian of the Secret”, a very human story of the world, shrouded in intense mystery.
