Escaroupim Avieira Village

Alentejo and Ribatejo
Buildings | Museums

Escaroupim is a typical fishing village, formed in the mid-1930s by fishermen from Praia da Vieira (Marinha Grande), who seasonally travelled to the Tagus River for winter fishing campaigns, particularly for shad.

Many of these fishermen settled along the riverbanks and established small fishing communities. In these villages, the houses are made of wood, painted in bright colours and built on stilts, in order to protect them from frequent flooding.
