Monastery of Leça do Balio

With the bold mission of "empowering people to read the world," the Foundation aims to inspire actions that foster prosperity and contribute to a more inclusive and culturally enriched society.

After decades of neglect, the Monastery of Leça do Balio has been revitalised as a centre for cultural renaissance. This 14th-century Gothic building, classified as a National Monument since 1910, has recently reopened to the public following a meticulous restoration project led by the renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza.

Now home to the Livraria Lello Foundation, the Monastery features an exhibition space, an auditorium, a gastronomy area, and a garden, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in an environment that unites history, art, and culture.

The Monastery of Leça do Balio boasts roots that date back to Roman times, playing a pivotal role in Portugal’s history. This iconic site was the setting for the royal marriage of King Fernando and Queen Leonor Teles and served as a refuge for King Miguel during the Siege of Porto.

The visual journey culminates in the imposing Escultura Aberta by Álvaro Siza. Constructed in white concrete and characterised by clean, rectilinear lines, this piece occupies an area of 400 m², demonstrating a remarkable harmony between Álvaro Siza’s contemporary style and the Monastery’s historical richness.

Meticulously designed to highlight the role of the Monastery of Leça do Balio as a historic waypoint for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way of St James, the sculpture was created to evoke deep introspection. Through a dynamic interplay of light and form, it offers a unique and contemplative experience.
