Today, the complex known as the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo comprises not only the castle itself, but also the walled enclosure that surrounded the town during the Late Middle Ages.
Its exact origin remains uncertain: it may date back to the Almohad period (12th century) or have been founded after the granting of the town charter in 1203 by King Sancho I.
