Festival de Cannes: Miguel Gomes wins Best Director award for “Grand Tour”

Miguel Gomes won the award for Best Director at the 77th Festival de Cannes for Grand Tour. The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the event, that took place last Saturday, May 25.

The Portuguese director received the award from Wim Wenders and ended up calling his cast and crew on stage, while thanking to the “Portuguese cinema” and “great Portuguese filmmakers”, such as Manoel de Oliveira and João César Monteiro.

The Portugal Film Commission was at the premiere of the film at the Festival de Cannes, a moment that marked the return of the Portuguese cinema to the official competition. Grand Tour, a co-production of Uma Pedra no Sapato, was supported by the Pic Portugal – Cash Rebate Incentive.

In addition, the short Bad for a Moment received a Special Mention at the festival. The Portuguese film by Daniel Soares, produced by O Som e a Fúria, was at the official selection of short films of the Festival de Cannes, that took place between May 14 and 25.
