Film and audiovisual professionals reflected on sustainability in the sector

“Sustainability in Film and Audiovisual Productions” was the theme of the event that took place in Batalha Centro de Cinema, Porto, last Sunday, September 24. Producers, directors, professors, and festival organizers, among other professionals and general public, participated in the debate, joining the reflection on sustainability.

“Portugal Film Commission has been encouraging the film and audiovisual sector to evolve towards more sustainable production models” stated the executive director of Portugal Film Commission, Ana Marques, highlighting the launch of the Guide to sustainable filming. The guide mobilizes the sector in the quest for sustainable environmental practices, compiling guidelines that must be implemented throughout the various stages of production.

In the opening session, Ana Marques also mentioned the importance of training more certified green consultants, creating new training programs in addition to the current offering and creating incentive policies for companies that implement sustainable production requirements.

The newly created Repensar – Associação Green Consultants de Portugal guided the first part of the event, introducing the concept of sustainability and warning about the carbon footprint of cinema and audiovisual in Portugal.

Oliver Lupiañez, environmental sustainability manager, and Maryllis Gonzalez, line producer, were the highlight of the most awaited session of the evening. The international guests addressed the current context in Spain and United Kingdom and shared some of the measures implemented to reduce the social, economic and environmental impact of several productions.

The event is available in podcast format and was organized by Portugal Film Commission, Filmaporto – film commission and Associação Green Consultants de Portugal, with the support of Batalha Centro de Cinema.

The initiative took place within the scope of the National Sustainability Day, which was celebrated for the first time in Portugal on September 25.
