Films supported by the Cash Rebate Incentive awarded by the Portuguese Film Academy

Bad Living won the award for Best Film of the Sophia Awards 2024, that were announced last Sunday, May 26. João Canijo, its director, received the award for Best Director, while Madalena Almeida was considered the Best Supporting Actress and João Braz won the Film Editing award.

Like Bad Living, several other projects supported by the Pic Portugal – Cash Rebate Incentive were recognized by the Portuguese Film Academy. Great Yarmouth – Provisional Figures led Beatriz Batarda to the award for Best Actress, Romeu Runa to the award for Best Supporting Actor, João Ribeiro to the one for Best Cinematography and the duo Miguel Martins and Rafael Cardoso to the one for Best Sound.

The award for Best Original Screenplay was handed to Carlos Conceição for Nação Valente, while the award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to Virgílio Almeida, for Nayola. Still regarding animation, My Grandfather’s Demons won the awards for Best Song and Best Soundtrack.

The Nothingness Club was awarded the Best Characterization and Special Effects and Miguel Borges was considered the Best Actor. The film Amadeo won the awards for Best Costume Design, Art Direction, Makeup and Hairstyling. Turn of the Tide, a series also supported by the Pic Portugal – Cash Rebate Incentive, won the award for Best Series or TV Movie.

Ana Marques, executive director of the Portugal Film Commission, was at the award ceremony. “Cinema and freedom” was the theme of the 13th edition of Sophia Awards, thus celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution.
