Portuguese and Spanish producers attended the first Iberian Meeting on Co-Production of Animation Series and Specials, held on Thursday, 7 November, at RTP headquarters in Lisbon. Organised by the Portuguese public broadcaster in partnership with its Spanish counterpart RTVE, the event explored the co-production strategies of both broadcasters and reviewed the animation landscape across the Iberian Peninsula.

“RTP has been actively fostering this sector for some years now,” said Nicolau Santos, President of RTP’s Board of Directors, who emphasised the vital role played by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) and the Portugal Film Commission. “This is a fantastic and very important moment for Portuguese animation,” he remarked during the event’s opening.

Luís Chaby Vaz, Film Commissioner and President of ICA, and Ana Marques, Executive Director of the Portugal Film Commission, participated in a panel on public support, discussing initiatives in Portugal and highlighting the Pic Portugal – Cash Rebate Incentive. To date, this incentive has supported nine animation projects, including Nayola, My Grandfather’s Demons, and They Shot the Piano Player.

Also present at the event were Ignasi Camós Victoria, Director-General of Spain’s ICAA (Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts), Diana Bueno Ochoa of ICEX – Spain Export and Investment, and Susana Costa Pereira, Executive Coordinator of the Creative Europe Information Centre.

As part of the Iberian Meeting on Co-Production of Animation Series and Specials, the project Alice’s Diary, the first co-production between RTP and RTVE, was presented as a case study. Throughout the day, the programme offered opportunities for networking and discussions on potential partnerships.
