Portugal Takes Centre Stage at Content Europe's Inaugural Edition

Lisbon hosted the first edition of Content Europe from April 21 to 23, a strategic market for the audiovisual industry that brought together around 900 professionals from across the world. The Portugal Film Commission (PFC) played a central role in the event, reaffirming Portugal as one of Europe’s most competitive destinations for international production.

One of the highlights of the event was the Industry Cocktail organised by the PFC. In her opening remarks, executive director Ana Marques highlighted the country’s operational advantages and vibrant creative ecosystem, as well as Portugal’s storytelling heritage, inviting international partners to collaborate with a country that carries nearly 900 years of narrative tradition.

This industry gathering also served as a platform to showcase recent projects that illustrate the success of national incentives and international co-productions. Among the highlights were The Marquise, a period drama co-produced by Ukbar Films and Spain’s Tornasol, supported by Netflix and RTP; Lisbon Noir, a crime thriller co-produced by TVI and Prime Video; Projecto Global, a Portuguese-Luxembourgish partnership developed simultaneously as both a film and a series, in collaboration with RTP; and Azul, an OPTO SIC original series filmed entirely in the Azores, with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion.

The event also featured the “Spotlight on Portugal” session, which brought together Manuel Claro, Vice-President of ICA, and representatives from RTP, SPi, Caracol Studios and 4 Second Way, in a debate on the sector’s internationalisation strategy and Portugal’s positioning as an essential and agile partner for major international audiovisual productions.

It is worth noting that the event’s opening was delivered by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, who presented SCRI.PT, a new €350 million incentive programme aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the national audiovisual and film industry.
