
The 2025 Sophia Awards once again celebrated national cinema, with several productions supported by the Pic Portugal – Cash Rebate Incentive receiving distinctions in some of the most prestigious categories of the Portuguese Film Academy awards. Among them, Grand Tour, directed by Miguel Gomes, took home the awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Editing.
The feature film The Worst Man in London, by Rodrigo Areias, received accolades for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Make-up and Hair, and Best Leading Actor, awarded to Albano Jerónimo.
In the acting categories, Rita Cabaço won Best Leading Actress for O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas, while Teresa Madruga and João Arrais secured the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards for Your Face Will Be the Last and Blood(less) Revolution, respectively.
The work of Paulo Abreu and André Gil Mata, based on Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi, earned UBU the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. BAAN was recognised for Best Original Score, while Amelia’s Children stood out in the Best Special Effects/Make-up category.
In addition to cinema, last Sunday evening, 27 April, also saw the Sophia Award for Best Series/Telefilm go to Matilha, produced by Edgar Medina.
